Cater to your creative side and lend a hand in Gainesville’s art community by volunteering at the 39th Annual Downtown Festival & Art Show. Gainesville is a hub of creativity in North Central Florida, and our community takes pride in its hardworking artistic element that thrives to make the city bright and culturally satisfying year round.

The City of Gainesville Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs is searching for people, organizations and businesses that would like to support our community by becoming volunteers for the Downtown Festival & Art Show. Four-hour shifts are available on Saturday, November 7, and Sunday, November 8, for volunteers of all ages.

Volunteers can greet visitors as they arrive at the festival, booth sit for artists, engage visitors in a feedback survey or help with the Children’s Imagination Station, a free, hands-on art activity area. As a token of our appreciation, volunteers will receive a commemorative t-shirt.

Greet Attendees
Greet guests and welcome them to the festival, provide programs and simple directions. Volunteers are the friendly faces that attendees encounter as they enter the festival. With a map of the festival site, greeters can easily answer basic questions such as “where is the information booth” or “where are the restrooms” as well as pass out programs and maps to interested guests.

Take Surveys
Survey information plays an important role in event improvements and direction as well as funding and sponsorships.
Volunteers will engage numerous guests in a quick 1-2-minute survey.

Booth Sitting
Individually greet and relieve artists for breaks.

Children’s Imagination Station

Children engage in the world of art and creativity as they visit the “Imagination Station.” Volunteers must be outgoing as they interact with children and their parents to assist with sidewalk chalk drawing, painting, mask design, puppet and button creation and clay sculpting. A background check is required for volunteers working this activity and a Department Volunteer Form must be submitted to the Festival Coordinator at andreisv@cityofgainesville.org.

The Jr. Fire Fighting Challenge
Coordinated by local fire fighters, the Jr. Firefighting Challenge is an obstacle course for preschoolers. Children dress like tiny fire fighters as they run the course up and over a giant inflatable obstacle. Volunteers help the children with their gear and assist as needed as they run through the course.  A background check is required for volunteers working this activity and a Department Volunteer Form must be submitted to the Festival Coordinator at andreisv@cityofgainesville.org.

Event Break-Down
Volunteers assist artists and staff to wrap up the event including taking down tables and chairs, moving supplies, and packing up equipment.
